- Teachers at Northern California high school ordered students wearing American flag T-shirt to turn it inside out during the Mexican independence celebration Cinco de Mayo. Teachers believed that the lack of respect shown to Latino students could lead to racial conflicts or worst another Spanish American war "Woah". With there hard efforts of getting to America, the Latino community felt that Cinco de Mayo should be recognized throughout America; and if that means eating only Mexican food and the beating of pinata so be it expressed the Latino community. Seventeen year old Jose Martinez from Live Oak High School said ,"I don't understand how they could show such disrespect, they don't see us Hispanics wearing our Mexican flag T-shirts on 4th of July".The case was brought to court and the unanimous three-judge panel said past problems gave officials sufficient and justifiable reasons for there actions. The case garnered national attention as many expressed the outrage that students were restricted from wearing patriotic clothing, and resistance groups such as IWWIW (I wear what I want) began to form. "They better be happy that we even gave them a day", said Billy from Alabama."we appreciate all the landscaping they did for us, but we would be fine without them". William Becker, one of the lawyers representing the students, said he plans to retain the students freedom as it was striped for showing compassion to there country. Becker says he would appeal to the U.S. Supreme court if he losses again. This incident shows racism and how it is still effecting our society today.
